Pet pumpkin carving template

Any pet with a clear head shape can become a template: dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, even a horse if you crop to the face. The work is removing the couch, keeping the ears attached, and not carving every whisker.

Make this stencil

Separate the animal from the room

Background removal floods in from the edges through colors close to the corners, or through a color you tap. Tap the couch, the grass, or the cage, not the pet. If the pet is a similar color to the blanket, removal will eat the chest. Undo it by turning background removal off and cropping tighter so the blanket is out of the square.

Tolerance is intentionally simple. There is no cloud model and no upload. A plain backdrop always beats a clever algorithm. A bedsheet behind the animal for ten seconds is the best editing you can do.

One head, one pumpkin

Full-body pets shrink the face until the eyes are specks, and specks get deleted. Crop to the head and a little neck. Rabbits need both ears in the frame and a shaved inner ear. Birds need a cut eye and a shaved beak. Horses need the ears and the nose. Scales, feathers, and individual spots should collapse into a few gray patches. That is the detail slider doing its job.

A collar, bandana, or bow can stay if it is a big shape. Fine patterns on fabric should be cropped out or they will look like damage.

Make sure it can be carved

After the preview, look for white spots trapped inside black. Those are floating pieces. The tool connects them with bridges of kept skin. Also look for a continuous outer rim of white or gray. If the pet's outline is cut all the way around, the whole head falls out. Nudge the threshold or turn background removal on so the area outside the pet stays skin.

Print the free PNG to see the size on paper, then buy the print pack if you want the watermark gone and a PDF with the cut / shave / keep legend. Carve on a thick-walled pumpkin. Thin decorative gourds crack when you shave.

Questions

Which preset should I use?
Pet. It keeps more detail than Logo and a slightly softer cut than Face. Switch to Logo only if the animal is already a high-contrast graphic.
The background is still there.
Tap Pick background and touch the backdrop color. If the pet and the backdrop are the same color, crop the backdrop out instead.
Is this safe for kids to carve?
Kids can pick the photo and poke the transfer holes. An adult should do the sawing. Use an LED, not a candle, if the pumpkin will sit near them.
